Beating Back To School Blues

We've been out of school unexpectedly for the past 5 days. The holiday kept stretching longer, longer and longer--at the last minute.

Fun? Perhaps not.

For parents, having to find new ways to occupy all that extra time (and energy). Finding new ways to keep your child busy and enjoying themselves at home.

For teachers, the worry of  'jetlagged' students, not keen on school after so much time away.

It's hard work on both sides.

Here's some ideas to help make the oft-dreaded 'Day 1' more enjoyable for all:

FOR PARENTS:

>Make sure your little one gets a good nights sleep the night before. An early bedtime (and at least 8-10 hours of uninterrupted sleep) makes for a much happier tot the next morning.

>Be sure to remind your child that they will be back to school the next day. Talk about their favorite aspects of school, what they are looking forward to and what they are not. If your child is new to school and still having difficulty separating from you, it's important to talk this process through with them.

>Make the morning as pleasant as possible.
Now I know, I know, this is much easier said than done. But small things can make a big difference. A good-morning cuddle. A soft whispered 'Good morning sunshine'. A favorite breakfast. A chit chat in the car on the way.

FOR TEACHERS:

> Get a good nights rest. A well-rested teacher is just as important as a well-rested student!

> Plan easy activities to transition your class back into routine. This is not the day for complicated crafts or new subjects introduced. Keep things mellow, add some soft background music, and as much individual 'catch up time' as you can manage.

> Add something new--in the form of a new play center, a new story book, or a new song. Something to make the first day back fun and memorable.

****

See you TOMORROW for a mid-week, first day back to school.

We can't wait. :-)
